Pass it On: My Motto for Life

PASS IT ON
More than a song - a motto for life!"Pass It On started from the simplest beginnings. Yet, it's become a motto for my life, my mantra if you will. It all started on a bicycle. In 2000, I was riding in the Canadian Rockies, amidst the most beautiful scenery I had ever encountered. It was my first prolonged trip away from our then only-child Kurt, who was six. As I pedaled mile after mile, I became introspective and philosophical, wondering what would be my legacy to him. At the time, I was convinced Kurt would be our only child. I realized that music was the one gift I could give him that would be uniquely from me. Unlike material goods, it could last for generations simply by being sung from parent to child to grandchild and so on. The song Pass It On was born. As I sang it in my head, I imagined it to be a simple folk song, with just guitar and voice. However, Pass It On grew bigger and bigger! Several schools performed it and each time I added new parts and instruments. By December 2001, it had grown into a song for 4-part harmony and symphony orchestra. The song was evolving just as the lyrics promise: ' We'll make it grow, with our own words, so forever it will be heard.'Now I realize that everything meaningful in my life relates to my desire and need to pass it on. My dream of a second child has finally come true, again satisfying my biological instinct to pass on a part of myself. What started out as a legacy to my older son has become my passion for passing on knowledge via music-making. Whether playing classical, popular, or original music, I get the most joy out of communicating with my audiences - sharing with them why the music was written and what makes it come alive for me. That is how I bridge the gap between performer and audience. That is how I 'pass it on.' As a result, I make new friends, meet new people, and continue to grow. That's when I feel most grateful to be doing what I love. While music is my passion, environmental protection is my calling. I have dedicated the CD to 'the open spaces in the world and to the people who are working to save them.' Land preservation and the preservation of all natural resources is critical if our generation is to pass on a planet that will sustain future generations."

Performathon for Unicef - January 1, 2005

My students and I played in a PERFORMATHON for UNICEF (the United Nations Children Fund) in October and raised $3400.00 - very timely in the wake of the tsunami tragedy.
