Another Shooting
(Lori Rosolowsky)
This was written in March 2001, immediately after the Santana High School shooting in California. Three weeks later, a copycat shooting happened across town.
Algebra was boring, science was okay
The hours sort of dragged along ‘til the last class of the day
It was Samantha’s turn to read a news event
She chose the headline story and told us what it meant.
There’s been another shooting--it happened across town
A student pulled a gun at school and seven kids went down
They quoted an official from the NRA
And as far as Sam could tell, this is what he seemed to say:
“Guns are good, they must be good
We use them every day
A few dead kids, a few dead kids
Is just the price we pay.
America, America
Was made for you and me
And even though kids kill with guns
At least our country’s free.”
